Web(b) of History

While watching Joe Webb absolutely crush it the other night against the Eagles, Carmina and I compiled a brief list of other impressive Web(b)s throughout history.

  • Spud Webb
  • Jim Webb
  • Webster Slaughter
  • Webster's Dictionary
  • World Wide Web
  • W.E.B. Dubois
I think that's pretty much it. Joe Webb could go down as the greatest Webb ever.

Special Teams Ride the Short Bus as Steelers Fall to Jets 22-17

The Steelers lost to the Jets at home, who last week lost to the Dolphins at home, whom the Steelers beat in week 7, but who lost to the Bills* at home today. What does this mean? What does your face mean?

The Steelers had a pretty nice opportunity to take care of the Jets and the Panthers over the course of 5 days and lock up a first-round bye and give themselves a nice 24 day stretch where they wouldn't have to worry about playing any meaningful games and Ben and Troy and Heath and whomever else could get healthy. But they blew this opportunity by spotting the Jets seven points, taking three penalties of Bengals-level stupidity, and suffering an epic, boner-killing safety late in the fourth quarter (Why is Mewelde Moore the running back on that play instead of Mendenhall? WHY, BRUCE?).

Now the Steelers REALLY have to try hard against the Panthers on Thursday night (at the exact same time the Pens play the Capitals, btw). Hopefully their special teams play today was just an aberration and this isn't the start of them reverting back to their 2009 form where poor tackling and generally shitty coverage lead to several crippling touchdowns and losses to the Browns.

The defense really isn't the same without Troy. CBS flashed some graphic in the first quarter of today's game listing the Steelers' record with and without Polamalu. I forget the numbers but that shit was frightening. They just do not win without that dude.  Make sure you ask Santa for a healthy Polamalu this Christmas.

I'm not too down on the defense though. They only allowed 13 points. One touchdown. And that was aided hugely by Ryan Clark's patented Human Missle Unnecessary Roughness Penalty (good at least once per game!), turning a 15 yard gain into a 30 yard gain. And even then the Jets had to win their gamble on 4th down and 1 from the 7 to get the touchdown. The Jets scored 9 points on Defense and Special Teams. Just can't let that happen. Especially against good teams.

Finally, Big Ben is a fucking beast. What do you think was going through Santonio's mind as he sees Ben leading his team down the field in the waining seconds of the game? Ben's fumble on 2nd and 10 from his own 41 was a real crusher. Cost them 14 yards, 10 seconds, a down, and a timeout. Brutal. But that was an unreal drive. Great game all around from My Favorite Accused Rapist of All Time (MFARAT).

*Have you looked at the Bills schedule? Freaking impossible.

Frank Gore Breaks Hip, Will Miss Rest of 2010 Season

San Francisco 49ers running back Frank Gore suffered a broken hip in San Francisco's 27-6 thrashing of division rival Arizona Cardinals Monday night. Gore was hurt during San Francisco's first offensive possession of the game. After briefly returning later in the game, Gore left for good and veteran backup Brian Westbrook took over. Gore was unavailable for comment following the game. He was seen leaving University of Phoenix Stadium aided by a cane.

Game Ball: The Sepulverizer

Would you, Steeler fan, recognize this man if you saw him at Silky's?

5 touches, 254 yards, and he's buried at the bottom of your boxscore. He is not on anybody's fantasy team (unless your league sucks and has punters). There was not a single person in Heinz field yesterday who was wearing a jersey with his name and number on it. That's because he's some punkass punter. But Daniel "The Sepulverizer" Sepulveda gets my imaginary game ball for his performance in the Steelers15-6 victory over Matt "The Anointed One" Ryan and the Atlanta Falcons.

You never notice a punter until he shanks one out of play at the most critical moment of a game. Kind of like how Mitch Berger did every game of the 2008 season. Yesterday Sepulveda was everything Mitch Berger (41.3 yards per punt in 2008) never was. 5 punts at an average of over 50 yards per punt. The Steelers had three consecutive three-and-outs after their opening drive. Sepulveda had to kick from his own 19 twice, and 25 once. Each kick went over 50 yards, with one going 55. Kicks like that helped the Steelers stay in the field position battle which ultimately kept the Falcons off the scoreboard.  His other two punts came from his own 17 and 25 again.

So good on you, Daniel Sepulveda. I hope you got laid last night.

Joe Flacco

Football starts Thursday, so everyone who has access to the internet is publishing predictions for everything from who will win the Super Bowl to who will win the NFC defensive rookie of the year or some shit. Every year I read NFL predictions I say I'm going to keep track of what all the experts predicted then review their picks when the season is over to see just how accurate they are. I never do this. Except this year, for this one prediction that everyone is making that is driving me insane.

The Ravens making or winning the Super Bowl because Joe Flacco is just so great he is going to take over the league.

3 of nfl.com's 7 experts have the Ravens making the Super Bowl. One dude says they are going to win it. 4 of espn.com's 16 experts have the Ravens winning the Super Bowl. One of them has Joe Flacco as MVP of the league this year.

John Clayton ranked all the QBs in the NFL. About Flacco, he says:

JOHN CLAYTON QB RANKING (12): In two seasons, Joe Flacco has passed for 6,584 yards and has guided Baltimore to three road playoff victories.

Joe Flacco's stats in those three wins:
2008 @ Miami: 9 for 23, 135 yds, 0 TD 0 INT
2008 @ Tennessee: 11 for 22, 161 yds, 1 TD 0 INT
2009 @ New England: 4 for 10, 34 yds, 0 TD 1 INT

For the record, his stats in his two playoff losses:
2008 @ Pittsburgh: 13 for 30, 141 yds, 0 TD, 3 INT
2009 @ Indianapolis: 20 for 35, 189 yds, 0 TD, 2 INT

It seems that the Ravens have won in the post season in spite of Flacco, not due to his leadership. He has proven to be a solid regular season QB, but sometimes good regular season players struggle with the pressure of the post season. Maybe he'll turn it around this year, or maybe the loss of Ed Reed and Ray Lewis getting old (he's 35 now) will be too much for them to deal with and they won't even make the playoffs.

Anyway. I hate Joe Flacco.

Heat Wave!

Today

As I sit in my apartment, which doesn't have air conditioning, because usually nobody needs air conditioning ever in San Francisco, I realize that I have become a total pansy when it comes to extreme weather. And by "extreme" I mean "colder than 45, warmer than 75." So seeing my car register 100 today made me just about poop my pants with fear.

I used to be impervious to extreme weather. -10 in January. 98 in June. No big deal. Three years in San Francisco and now I can't handle a little heat.

2010 Steeers!

There is football on my TV right now. This excites me greatly. But the Steelers had such a disappointing 2009-10 that I haven't missed football as much as I normally do. And with Ben being banned the first four games I feel like there is even less to get excited about. HOW-EV-AH. I watched a good part of their first pre-season game against the Lions and I was struck by a few things I saw. Here are some things that I'm excited AND scared about this year.

  • GOOD: Dennis Dixon looks SOLID. It was absolutely pouring down rain at Heinz Field Saturday night but DD seemed totally unfazed. In spite of the slippery ball he was very accurate and threw a nice tight spiral. And even though the turf started to give way (like it always does) he still managed to scramble around and evade tacklers with ease. The scrambling dimension really neutralizes what opposing defenses can do as far as blitz schemes and deep coverage. He exploited the Lions a bunch when they blitzed and he stepped up or they rushed three and all the coverage went long. The only downside to DD is that he is often too excited to take off and doesn't always give plays enough time to develop. I think he'll get more comfortable with waiting it out in the future (especially with Ben as his mentor: dude stands around FOREVER back there).
  • BAD: Bruce Arians still cannot call a football game. Granted it's hard to tell what they are trying to accomplish in August against the Lions, but thinking back to last year and what I saw it seems like we're going to get more of the same out of BA. First down: singleback formation: run for no gain. Second down:  repeat first down. Third down: screen or 40 yard deep route that takes 6 seconds to develop while the other team blitzes. Sack. Punt.
  • GOOD: Isaac Redman looks like he might actually be a legit power runner, which is something the Steelers haven't had since the Bus retired. They turned to him in some goal-line situations the other night and in spite of the lackluster O-line he was able to break through. Could be a really effective third-down back.
  • GOOD: Arnaz Battle might actually have a little bit of gas left in the tank. He had a nice catch-and-run in the second quarter that set up a Redman touchdown. Good hands, runs decent routes. Seems like a useful addition, but he'll never replace Santonio.
  • BAD: Byron Leftwich was slow and lumbering four years ago when he lost his starting job to David Garrard in Jacksonville. Now he's older, so he's even slower and more lumbering. The O-line is simply not good enough to give him time to amble back in his drop, make his reads, then whip the ball up from his hip to behind his head and release. Dude is just too slow.
  • BAD: O-line is a sieve. For real, I don't know what they're gonna do.
  • GOOD: The defense hit hard and forced turnovers. The backups played great. KFox looks like a legitimate backup option at linebacker.
Clearly one game is not enough to judge a team, but there are some things from last year that I get particularly concerned about for the upcoming year that I would like to see fixed at some point in these exhibition games.

Namely:
  • Changing up the play calls on offense. BA has got to do more with the talent he has. Ben (when he is back) needs to get outside the pocket more. He is a significantly better passer when he's on the run. Dennis Dixon is the same way. Get him on the move and if there isn't anything there he can at least pick up a few yards on the scramble.
    • They also have to start running out of the I formation more. The line can't run block for shit so why not put Frank Summers or Sean McHugh in front of Mendenhall to take on the first would-be tackler?
    • Oh yeah, and SPREAD THE FIELD, BA. Why not send Big Mike Wallace deep a few times each game? Let Ben do his patented 5-yard underthrow that he's so good at. Whatever. Just give the other team's defense something to think about.
  • RELATED: O-Line: Give the QB and RB more room. Ben (or whoever) needs more than 2 seconds  to make a pass, and the running backs need at least some semblance of a hole to run through. When Mendenhall gets a seam he can be REALLY dangerous. He averaged over 5 yards per carry in several games last year so you know he can bust off a long run. He just needs to be able to squeak through the first attackers.
  • Learn how to score in the red zone. Last year the Steelers were 22nd in the league in red-zone scoring. This mostly has to do with Arians and his miserable play-calling (you know, where it would be first and goal on the 1 and they'd run it off tackle three straight times for no gain).
  • Troy needs to stay healthy. Everything LeBeau wants to do defensively stems from having Polamalu in the secondary to scare the living piss out of opposing passers. Harrison and Woodley blitz, QB looks downfield to get rid of the ball, sees Troy, hesitates, SACK. And he is vital to the Steelers protecting leads (which we will get to in a moment). Now, there isn't a whole lot they could have done about Troy injuring himself to begin with, but they could have kept him out another week or two more to keep him from RE-injuring himself. They probably win the Oakland and Cleveland games if Polamalu is around in the second half to neutralize their passing attacks.
  • Rediscover the run defense. Do you remember that streak the Steelers had where they didn't allow a 100-yard rusher for like three seasons? They need to revert to that form. A lot of this will rely on how much Ziggy Hood has come along since last year. The D-line is pretty old with the exception of Ziggy.
  • Closing out games. Check out these five losses from last year.*
    • Week 2: Chicago. Leading 14-7 after 3 quarters. Lost 17-14
    • Week 3: Cincy. Leading 20-9 after 3 quarters. Lost 23-20
    • Week 10: Cincy. Leading 9-6 at half. Lost 18-12
    • Week 11: Chiefs. Leading 17-7 at half and 24-17 with 8:35 left in 4th quarter. Lost 27-24
    • Week 13: Raiders: Leading 10-6 at half, 17-13 with 7:13 left and 24-20 with 1:56 left. Lost 27-24
There was more I wanted to include but after researching those losses I'm too frustrated to remember what it was.

So we'll see what they can do this year. I'm definitely skeptical of their chances of winning the division as the Browns, Bengals, and Ravens have all seemed to get better while the Steelers stayed basically the same (and lost their starting QB for 4 games). I think if Dixon (and then Ben, when he comes back), Mendenhall, and Big Mike Wallace stay healthy on offense and Troy, Harrison, and Woodley can stay healthy on D the Steelers could win 10-11 games and possibly grab a wild card. And after last year, a wild card berth would feel like a MAJOR victory.

*They also lost in OTat the Ravens in that Sunday night heartbreaker (when Dixon got his first start for the concussed Roethlisberger and one-armed Batch), and that shitfest on Thursday night at Cleveland where Ben got sacked 8 times and they didn't score a touchdown.

Announcing

I don't have much time for this (gf wants to get on so she can play Snood), but I want to piggyback on something Carmina mentioned on her blog earlier today.

The announcers for the World Cup are fucking incredible. They add so much to my viewing experience (with the exception of Ally McCoist, who I couldn't understand if it was my job). I don't really get soccer that well, but I am willing to listen to these bros talk about it because of their sweet accents. They all sound like James Bond. They use the coolest words like "speculative" and "splendid" and "odious" and "brilliant." They know when to talk, when to get excited, when to explain the action, and most importantly, they know when to SHUT THE FUCK UP. I thank Jeebus every day that ESPN didn't send Chris Berman to South Africa to call the USA games. Bob Costas ruined Stephen Strasburg's debut by talking the entire time (well documented by Deadspin).

I want my commentators to add to my experience by explaining the action in an entertaining and accurate way. I don't need some pinhead like Costas or Berman trying to interject himself into the action by talking over the game for the sake of hearing himself speak.

There is no way I can imagine anyone calling this goal any better.

So Not Auth

OMG! I totally just saw a bro at Valencia and 26th riding a bicycle with several gears! I tried to snap a photo of this unreal scene but I couldn't dig my vintage 1968 Polaroid Swinger out of my Chrome messenger bag in time cause the seat belt buckle got jammed.

:  :  :  :  :  :  :  :

Apparently that Mission Mission post I raged out on yesterday is some sort of inside joke that only like three people get, one of which is the author of the post. According to commenter Kristen we are supposed to understand this joke because grainy photo guy is wearing sandals and shorts together. I know, right? It's like, so obvious how could we NOT be getting it? HAHA.

AH! But read further and you learn it is all some April Fool's joke that is not even remotely funny. This is why nobody understands it is a joke. Jokes = funny. This post = basically everything Mission Mission posts about anyway. Can't BELIEVE I didn't get that joke!

It's all good, though. MM has come back strong with this fine entry on someone's filthy shoes and hideous socks with strawberries.

The Face of a Tiger.. and the Body.. of a Tiger

I was thinking about how everyone has been just crushing Tiger Woods, and I think it is totally warranted. Dude cheated on his wife AND two kids (the kids part is what really gets me) and created a fake persona to sell an image and make a shitload of cash. Deserves to get crushed.

He spent some amount of time in a rehab clinic for what he claims to be an addiction to sex. I don't have any experience with this so I can only take his word for it and presume he's not dicking us all around again (although this is definitely a possibility).

So if he actually does have some sort of sex addiction that requires rehabilitation, shouldn't his problem be treated with a little more civility? If the details of what happened Thanksgiving night revealed that Tiger was an alcoholic, wouldn't the public generally have empathy toward him? If sex addiction is a real disease on par with alcoholism, shouldn't we feel kinda bad for him and not gawk at every juicy scandalous detail that emerges about the depths of his depravity?

Internet Odyssey

Pandora plays Palo Alto by Radiohead. So clearly, I

. Google "Palo Alto Radiohead"
. Go to Wiki page on Palo Alto by Radiohead
. Go to Wiki page for Radiohead Discography
. Go to Wiki page for Hail to the Theif
. See they play something called an Ondes Martenot on that album.
. Go to Wiki page for Ondes Martenot
. embiggen Ondes Martenot picture because wtf thing looks crazy
. Google Ondes Martenot
. Watch Youtube of dude playing Ondes Martenot
. See "Legend of Zelda Theme Played on Theremin" in the related videos
. Watch the shit out of that
. See "Clair de Lune played on Theremin"
. Watch the shit out of that, too
. Google "Time signature Clair de Lune"

It all happens so quickly, man. If I hadn't snapped out of it reading some piano message board about how to play Clair de Lune I don't know what would have happened to me. Is there a term for getting sucked into the internet this? I think it happens to people a lot.

Zhi's Australian Survival Guide: Knives

It seems like only yesterday when Zhi was telling me at the Clipper St. housewarming party that, "The last thing to go .... is the balance." Any now my gigantic Chinese friend is taking his athletic thighs and moving to Australia. Well kids, Australia is a weird place (take it from me, someone who has never been there before), and I don't want Zhi finding himself caught off guard when some Foster's-swilling didgeridoo humper gets in his face when he starts fist-pumping at the club.

At some point I figure we'll have a Crocodile Dundee viewing party where Zhi will be able to absorb most of what he needs to know about his new home country. But clearly knives should be a point of emphasis. From what I can tell, everyone is Aussie carries a knife and a whip, standard issue. Two most important things with knives? Identification and use.

Identification:

(Looks like Zhi will be drinking Mountain Dew for his morning caffeine.)

Use:

Notice how Croc's woman totally creams her jeans after that knife display. However, it is important to remember that she is an ignorant Yank who has no idea what the fuck she just saw. Australian babes expect this level of knifemanship at a minimum. It is not as easy as it looks.

Good luck Zhi! Go buy a huge knife.

Going Dark

Because NBC hates me and everyone else on the west coast who likes hockey, I am forced to watch this afternoon's USA v. SUI game, which takes place at 12 PST, on tape delay at 3 PST, which will not-so-conveniently bleed into the CAN v. RUS game at 430 PST. Watching live sporting events on tape delay BLOWS. You spend most of the day trying to avoid any outlet where you might come across the score of the game. It's a nightmare. And even if you somehow manage to avoid knowing the score of the event you are watching, it is far less dramatic watching it delayed.

So at noon PST I'm totally shutting down. No TV, internet, phone, and as little human interaction as possible until after I catch up live to the CAN v. RUS game. If you are ill and in need of assistance, do not attempt to contact me.

Suck it, Hosers

Yesterday was sick. USA ruled. I don't know if we can beat the Canadians again but for this week it doesn't matter.

The thing about this win that has been the most fun for me is hearing sports talk radio bros try to talk hockey. Some of the things I have heard today:

. "And when Rafalski beat Brodeur ... I think it was pad side...?

. "The greatest hockey game ever played on North American soil."

. "Miller had a few huge saves ... like remember that one he had with the big arm pad thing where he holds the stick?"

. "I don't know if the ice was just faster up there or what. I mean, it is Canada, after all. I assume it has to be easier to make ice there than down here."  -- this dude was DEAD ass serious.

. "Incredible stick-eye coordination ..."

. Some dude consistently saying that Canada had the puck " ... inside USA's red zone most of the game ..."

Incredible.

This pic of Brooksy crushing Sid makes my head want to explode:

This Post Has Nothing To Do With Curling

I have long been unhappy with books. Actually, it's more that I have been unhappy with reading books. I like books. I like all the books I have from college. I like the books I have from before college. I like that I have them. I like to look at them. I like the thought of one day having a library and all these books I've traveled around the country with will have a permanent home, and I will be able to admire them and give them to other people to read. I like the idea of my kids being surrounded by books. But more often than not when I go to read one of my books I am quickly overwhelmed by the thought of consuming that many pages, and I give up.

When I was in college deciding on a major, I wanted desperately to do something I liked. I had a few friends who had decided to get into computer science because the money was good. Some did business for the same reason, or they were bored and business seemed easy and open-ended. Some did pre-med or pre-law because their parents demanded they become doctors or lawyers. I picked English (and later Education on the advice of my father -- "I have known quite a few English majors, actually. They all used to wait tables for me at the Olive Garden.") because I loved to read and write. This made total sense to me.

By the time I left college I developed an allergy to reading any piece of writing longer than forty pages. All I did for five years was read. I estimate I read two books per week for five years. This is a lot of books, but there are definitely people out there who read this many books on a regular basis. I figured out after college that sometimes you should not always make what you love your craft, because once it becomes something you must do it takes on a whole new complexion. I worry that one day I will wake up and despise golf now that I am a golf pro.

So the other day Carmina posted about Chris Jones' profile of Roger Ebert in Esquire. I finally read this a couple days ago and it was INCREDIBLE. I could give two shits less about Roger Ebert but I was gripped the whole way through. It was just amazing writing. Immediately after reading that I came upon Conor Friedersdorf's list of his favorite journalism of 2008 and 2009. So far I've read three stories and each one has been brilliant. This is encouraging for me because these mofos are LONG and I've really enjoyed reading all of them. Hopefully these massive pieces will ease me into reading novels again.

(The three stories I read can be found herehere, and here.)

Super Bowl Prop Bets!

I wasted $20 from my Bodog account to place insane wagers on all manner of unpredictable things to happen (or not) during the game. I put $1 on each of these 20:

Colts (-5) over Saints: I would be shocked and appalled (but happy!) if the Saints won this game

Team offense to cross the 50 yard line first in the game
Wager is official once either team offense crosses the 50 yard line. Punt / Kickoff / Fumble / Interception Return does not count towards wager
Colts (-130)

How many yards will the first field goal of the game be?
37-43 (7/2)

What will be the result of the first coaches challenge of the game?
Play Stands (-115)

The last score of the game will be
Field Goal or Safety (+160)

Total quarterback sacks made in the game by both teams
Over 3.5 (+220)
I feel like the Saints will be doing everything humanly possible to get to Pey Pey. They gotta get at least a couple. And Drew Teeth Brees will do soemthing stupid and get his ass sacked.

Will there be a lead change in the second half?
Yes (+150)
God I hope so

Will there be a missed extra point after touchdown?
Yes (+1000)
There was no way I could pass this up. What a line. Also, this is another reason why athletes get paid like they do. Can you imagine if these guys made what truck drivers make and this line appeared in a sportsbook? Throw a quick $2500 on this and BAM! How could they not conspire to miss an extra point?

In which quarter will the Saints score the most points?
3rd (57/20)
I like this one cause the line is 57/20) if it were bumped up to 3/1 I would have never bet it.

Will the Colts score in every quarter?
Yes (+125)
This seems like easy money ($.25!)

The largest lead of the game by either team will be
Under 15.5 (-140)
This is more me hoping for a good game than anything.

Double Result: Overtime does not count towards wager
Tie - Colts (16/1)
So for me to win this the game must be tied at halftime and the Colts have to be leading at the end of the fourth quarter. There is absolutely no way this happens.

Will the game total be odd or even?
Even (+110)
The money line for "odd" was like -125 or some shit. Is it really more mathematically likely that any game will end with an odd total number of points than even? I don't get it.

Odds to win MVP
Austin Collie (20/1)
I like the cut of this fellow's jib, I guess

****THINGS THAT HAVE ABSOLUTELY NOTHING TO DO WITH FOOTBALL****

How long will it take Carrie Underwood to sing the National Anthem?
Over 1:42 (+135)
I know nothing about this woman, but I feel confident she will sing the shit out of every note in order to squeeze as much time out of this appearance as possible. I wonder if she is allowed to wager on this?

What will be the result of the coin toss?
Tails (-105)
Never fails, bro.

What color will the Gatorade be that is dumped on the Head Coach of the winning team?
Lime Green (8/1)
Have you ever even seem lime green Gatorade? Isn't lime flavored Gatorade yellow? This is a horrible bet.

How many times will CBS announcers fully mention Hurricane Katrina during the game?
Wager is on the number of times announcers specifically say "Hurricane Katrina" during the game (from kickoff to final whistle).
Over 2.5 (-150)
I wish there was a way I could put one million dollars on this.

How many times will Pete Townshend do his legendary windmill move?
Windmill move must be a full 360 degree revolution and be shown on TV to be counted for this wager
Under 5.5 (+160)
Pete Townshend is 64. There is absolutely no chance he can successfully execute six "full 360 degree revolutions" on a 64 year-old shoulder.

Will they show a replay of Tom Benson celebrating the missed field goal against Tampa Bay from the regular season?
Replay must be shown after the kickoff and before final whistle for "yes" to be graded the winner.
Yes (+275)
This is my favorite highlight from the entire season. Too good to not show.

GO SUPERBOWL WIN TEAMS YEA!
